150 Years of Organ Music In Bryan

Dr. Alan Strong, Director of Music at Saint Andrew’s Episcopal Church, presents “150 Years of Organ Music:  An Organ Recital Celebrating the 150th Anniversary of St. Andrew’s Episcopal Church” on November 17 at St. Andrew's, Bryan

The music for the evening has been selected from organ music spanning the past 150 years, much of which has been played for services and recitals at St. Andrew’sd. Selections include:  Tu es Petrus (1867) by Franz Liszt; Symphonie Gothique:  Andante Sostenuto (1895) by Charles Marie Widor; Sonata Eroica:  Verdun  (1917) by Charles Villiers Stanford;   selections from Neuf Pieces (1942) by Jean Langlais; Processional (1964) by William Mathias; and Prelude & Fugue on “Adoro Devote” (2017) by Richard White.  Dr. Strong is also celebrating his own 25th anniversary as organist at St. Andrew’s and the program will include the Toccata, Adagio & Fugue (BWV 565 / 1717) by J. S. Bach – music that he played for his very first service at St. Andrew’s in August, 1991.

The program will conclude with one more piece from 150 years ago: Final (1865) by César Franck.  Saint Andrew’s is located at 217 W. 26th Street in downtown Bryan, and the program is free and open to the public.  Come join us for this celebration of music and the continuing vitality of this 150-year-old congregation, in the historic Neo-Gothic edifice that has been a landmark in downtown Bryan where there has been organ music for more than a century.
