A Star In Our Midst: Houston Student Excels In Swimming

To say that Cameron Word is a winner would be an understatement. As can be witnessed by the plethora of medals and trophies in the photo to the right, the St. Thomas the Apostle Episcopal School, Houston, second grader has elevated herself to “star” status when it comes to competitive swimming.

Among her numerous achievements, Cameron is ranked number one in the state of Texas for the 100 free long course meter, as well as for the 100 back short yard. Cameron has also proudly represented the state of Texas in nationals. Her national rankings include ninth place for the 100 back long course meter, 200 free long course meter, and the 100 free long course meter.

While she may have inherited a competitive gene from her mother who happens to be a competitive   runner, Cameron’s achievements did not come easily. Swimming season starts in August and ends in July, and during this time, Cameron trains four days a week with South Shore Sails-‐ a grueling schedule for the second grader who also happens to be an excellent student.

Her achievements are especially remarkable when we consider the fact that the eight year old is competing against children anywhere from nine to eleven years of age.

How does she do it? Cameron explained she loves swimming and finds the pool a comfort during our hot Texas summers. Lastly, when asked whether she would want to one day participate in the Olympics, Cameron flashed a big smile and said, “Yes!” I do not doubt her answer for one second, because this little star has the passion and dedication to achieve this dream!
