The Commission on Black Ministry presented the Annual Celebration of the life of Absalom Jones at a Eucharistic service on February 23 at Hope Episcopal Church.

The service was officiated by four black diocesan clergy, exhibiting what Absalom Jones had began over 200 years ago. The Rev. Canon Glenice Robinson-Como (Christ Church the Cathedral), the Rev. Roberta Knowles (Hope Episcopal Church), the Rev. Victor J. Thomas (St. James-Houston), and the Rev. Johannes George (Christ the King), conducted the service in the traditional African way.  Special singing from Christ the King Episcopal Church, happy voices from the choir of Hope Church, and the spiritual Contemporary Jazz Group from St. James-Houston, all showered the congregation with echoing remembrances of past and present.

George gave the homily and related his experiences in Sierra Leone, his home country of West Africa.

A reception was held following the services. This was a wonderful opportunity for Episcopalians from several churches to meet, greet and share a wonderful ‘passing of the peace.’  Absalom Jones would have been extremely proud of what he created.

The Commission on Black Ministry extends a hearty thank you for all of those you shared in the following prayer: “Set us free, heavenly Father, from every bond of prejudice and fear; that, honoring the steadfast courage of your servants Absalom Jones and Richard Allen, we may show forth in our lives the reconciling love and true freedom of the children of God, which you have given us in our Saviour Jesus Christ, who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and for ever.  Amen.”
