All Saints, Austin, to Host John Philip Newell for Bailey Lecture Series

All Saints', Austin, will host John Philip Newell for the Bailey Lecture Series, an annual endowed lectureship. Poet, theologian and writer, Newell frequently teaches in the U.S. and Canada, including three weeks each summer at Ghost Ranch, New Mexico where he is Companion Theologian at Casa del Sol Spirituality Center. He is best known for his work in Celtic Spirituality reclaiming wisdom from a stream of Christianity that has been discredited by the dominant Western sources.

After a sabbatical in 2010 Newell felt called to contribute to the peace of the world by focusing on healing within the three faiths whose heritage begins with Abraham, Sarah, and Hagar--the Jewish, Christian, and Muslim faiths. Just as religious tension and misunderstanding between the Abrahamic faiths have long contributed to instability and war in the Middle East and recently in Iraq and Afghanistan, the core values and teachings of the three faiths hold seeds of peace that can bring a new harmony. During 2011 Newell called forth the "Praying for Peace Initiative," including interfaith gatherings in the places where he is teaching to chant and pray for peace.

He has asked that the first night of the Bailey Lectures, November 11, 2011 (Armistice Day), be designated a time to call together all faiths to pray for peace with chants based upon sacred texts.

“As never before in the history of humanity, we are becoming aware of our interrelatedness," Newell writes in his latest book, A New Harmony: The Spirit, the Earth and the Human Soul. "We are beginning to comprehend that what we do to other species is what we do to ourselves. We are beginning to perceive that what we do to other nations and peoples is what we do to our own soul. The question is whether we will choose to translate this emerging consciousness into transformative action.”
