Austin Charity Barbecue Competition and Acoustic Concert Returns

The Southwest Showdown, an annual barbecue cook-off benefitting Episcopal Relief & Development and organized by students of the Seminary of the Southwest, returns to Austin, featuring the music of Two Day Suitcase as well as Tessy Lou and the Shotgun Stars.

The cook-off will begin on Saturday, February 22 at 11:00 AM at the Seminary of the Southwest campus. A donation of $10 per person or $20 per family is suggested, with proceeds going to charity.

The barbecue competition began last year as a way to raise awareness and money for an organization that provides relief for those in need around the world, teaching sustainable practices to encourage growth. There will be about fifteen teams competing, ranging from seasoned competitors to backyard barbecu’ers. The barbecue competition pulls together the Austin community for two of the things we do best: barbecue and helping those in need.

Tessy Lou and the Shotgun Stars, an acclaimed Austin-based country band, will provide the music. Compared in the Huffington Post to Emmylou Harris and Patsy Cline, Tessy Lou is quickly becoming a national star on the country music scene. The family-friendly event will also feature a bouncy castle and petting zoo.

Teams wishing to enter the cook-off should register online at www.southwestshowdown.com. The cooking begins onsite at 5:00 PM on Friday, February 21. The categories are brisket and ribs.
