Austin Convocation to Host Hymnfest

The Austin Convocation of the Diocese of Texas and the Diocesan Music Commission will host a community Hymn Festival at St. Matthew’s, Austin, on Sunday, May 20 at 6 p.m. This celebration of word and song will feature Thomas Pavlechko, Cantor/Composer-in-Residence at St. Martin’s Lutheran Church in Austin. The audience will be invited to sing hymns, both familiar and new, in festive arrangements by Pavlechko and will be led by a massed choir of choristers from Austin churches. Pavlechko will conduct from the organ and a double brass quartet and various drums will accompany the hymnody.
 

The theme of this hymn festival is "From the Time of the Cross through Holy Week, Easter, Pentecost and Trinity" and features hymns and anthems on themes of:  Release from Darkness and Bondage; Cross and Resurrection; Rogation Day/Earth Day; Pentecost and Trinity.
 

The festival will feature anthems composed and published by Pavlechko; hymns (new and old) from Episcopal and Lutheran hymnbooks. Churches in the Austin Convocation and Lutheran Assemblies are invited to bring their choirs and congregants to sing and all singers, no matter what skill level, are welcome to sing in this vocal event.
