Boy Scout Completes Eagle Scout Project at St. Thomas the Apostle, Nassau Bay

Joe Bigler, a junior at Clear Lake High School and a member of Boy Scout Troop 848, chose to develop a 10 year plan for the grounds around St. Thomas, Nassau Bay, as his Eagle Scout project. Bigler worked with a landscape architect to implement a portion of the plan.

Bigler developed a survey to receive input from the congregation, presented results to the landscape architect before meeting with the congregation to present the plan. He sold and delivered 640 bags of mulch to church members and in local neighborhoods and raised more than $1,000 to inaugurate his project.

Bigler began around the men’s cooking group area, the Holy Smokers Barbecue Pit, visible at the entrance to the church. Azaleas and dwarf yaupons now hide the cookers from view and provide a safety barrier between hot grills and children who might be nearby.  Bigler also built a trench around the foundation of the church in and filled it with gravel to help water drainage and wood storage for the grills.

“Support from the congregation of St Thomas and from Troop 848 was remarkable throughout Joe’s project,” said Herb Meyer, senior warden at St. Thomas. “Many helped with the planting and we are grateful to Joe and his very professional plan that helps both the church and the surrounding neighborhood.”
