De Santis Appointed Episcopal Journal Editor

Solange De Santis, religion writer, editor and corporate communications consultant, has been appointed editor of Episcopal Journal, effective Feb. 19.

She will direct the editorial production of the monthly publication, as well as several quarterly magazines that are printed and distributed by the Journal in partnership with dioceses.

De Santis succeeds Jerry Hames, who has been editor since the Journal’s inception in February 2011. Both Hames and De Santis had served as editor of Episcopal Life when that publication was published at the Episcopal Church Center.

“I heartily welcome Solange to the Episcopal Journal family,” said Lawrence W. Moore, president of the board of directors and general manager. “She brings a wealth of experience and knowledge of the church, and her objectivity and integrity are well-known and respected by readers of the old Episcopal Life and Episcopal communicators.”

De Santis was until recently editor of Ecumenical News Service and directed editorial coverage from a world ecumenical perspective for the World Council of Churches. The council shuttered the news service last October due to budgetary constraints.

From July 2008 to September 2009, she was editor of Episcopal Life Media, directing news coverage for the Episcopal Church. Immediately prior to that, she was a staff news and feature writer for Anglican Journal, the national publication of the Anglican Church of Canada, for nearly eight years.

A graduate of the Columbia University Graduate School of Journalism in 1976, she has worked for NBC News and Information Service, Associated Press, and the West Palm Beach Post and was chief financial correspondent for Reuters in Los Angeles and the Canadian news editor in Toronto. In Toronto she was a staff reporter for the Wall Street Journal.

One of her main interests throughout the years has been theater, and in 2011 she received a master’s degree in educational theater from New York University. She has worked in theater in Canada and the United States as sound designer, director and consultant and maintains a blog, http://solangeontheater.blogspot.com.

Episcopal Journal is an independent publication published for Episcopalians, offering individual and group subscriptions as well as diocesan partnerships. Since its inception in early 2011 it has been published with diocesan publications from Long Island to San Joaquin, either in monthly news journal format or quarterly magazines.
