Diocesan Council Seeks Volunteers

Volunteers from throughout the Diocese of Texas are needed to help at Diocesan Council, February 7-8, 2014, in Galveston. As the Diocese’s 150 churches, college ministries and institutions of service gather for worship and to do the business of the diocese, Bishop Andy Doyle invites any interested church members to participate in this annual event.

“The Church’s General Convention draws its volunteers from across the country,” Bishop Doyle said. “We want to take a page from their play book and try this locally. We are one church, one body coming together and I’d like to open the opportunity to participate to everyone in our diocese. This is our family reunion!” he added.

Council has historically moved around the diocese, hosted by local churches in each area. Beginning with the 165th Council in 2014, planning has been centralized in order to be able to plan more than a year in advance and to take the burden off local churches. Mary Cloud, a member of Trinity, Houston, is serving as coordinator of Council and already has planned locations through 2016.

“Building a database of diocesan-wide volunteers will keep us from reinventing the wheel each year,” Cloud said. “It will also give more people the ability to serve their Church in a new and broader way.”

The 165th Council will be held at the Galveston Island Convention Center, 5600 Seawall Blvd., Galveston. A reception will follow. The business meeting will be held on Saturday.
