Episcopalians Enjoy Soccer Match at New Dynamo Stadium

The Houston Dynamo put on a show for Episcopal Night, edging out the Philadelphia Union in a suspenseful thriller, 2-1 on June 30. About 70 Episcopalians from around the Houston area came together to tailgate and watch the soccer match together.

The pre-game tailgate was highlighted by Philly Cheese-steak sandwiches, snacks, and games. Just before the match began, the festivities moved from the parking lot into the brand new BBVA Compass Stadium located just outside of downtown Houston, across the highway from the Astros' Minute Maid Park.

Episcopalians from All Saints', Stafford; St. Andrew's, Pearland; Good Shepherd, Tomball; and other local churches watched the Dynamo stay unbeaten at home. Plans are already in the works for another Episcopal Night with the Dynamo in 2013.

"We had a great time on our first attempt at the Dynamo night," said All Saints' rector Stephen Whaley.

According to Whaley, the Dynamo opened the scoring in the 20th minute off a fade away score by star midfielder Brad Davis. The Union equalized in the 46th minute. Houston pressured for much of the match but was unable to hit the back of the net until just before the end of the match in the 83rd minute.  Brian Ching was given a penalty kick which edged in off the top bar and down into the goal, giving Houston a 2-1 advantage and securing the victory.
