More than 130 Episcopalians gathered on February 22 at St. James, Houston, to celebrate Absalom Jones, the Episcopal Church's first African-American priest. Six of the Diocese's seven African-American clergy joined the celebration: The Rev. Glenice Robinson-Como of Christ Church Cathedral; the Rev. Francene Young of St. Luke the Evangelist, Houston; the Rev. Victor Thomas of St. James, Houston; the Rev. Israel Ahimbisibwe of Holy Spirit and Redeemer, Houston; the Rev. Roberta "Bobbie" Knowles of Hope, Houston; and the Rev. Fitzgerald S. “Jerry” Critchlow of Good Shepherd, Kingwood. The Rev. Johannes George of Christ the King, Alief, was unable to attend.

Attendees held a Eucharistic service and watched a video of the Episcopal Church's forum, Fifty Years Later: the State of Racism in America followed by a panel discussion featuring: Dr. Gregory Vincent, vice president of diversity for the University of Texas at Austin; The Rev. Francene Young, rector of St. Luke's, Houston; Deloyd Parker, Houston community leader; and Dr. Joseph Jones, facilitator and retired educator at Texas Southern University.

Following the event, St. Luke's, Houston, hosted a free concert in honor of Black History Month, presented by the Community Music Center of Houston.
