Former Archbishop to Visit St. Martin's

Former Archbishop George Carey will visit St. Martin’s, Houston, May 19-22 for several events. Carey, 103rd Archbishop of Canterbury, will speak at St. Martin’s men’s breakfast on May 19 at 7 a.m. in the church. Breakfast is served beginning at 6:30 a.m. in the parish hall ($3 donation requested). Carey’s talk is entitled: Daniel in the Lion’s Den: Being a Christian in a non-Christian World.

 

Carey will also be a guest at St. Martin’s music festival weekend, featuring the Houston Boychoir, Sara Groves in concert and Mozart’s Coronation Mass (see www.stmartinsepiscopal.org for details). Carey will preside over a confirmation service at 10 a.m. on Saturday and preach at the 9 and 11:15 Sunday services. On Sunday, former Archbishop Carey will offer a teaching for adults entitled Staying Grounded in a World of Shaking Foundations, from 10:15-11:00 a.m. in the church.

 

Carey was instituted as Archbishop in 1991 and served more than 70 million Anglicans and Episcopalians around the world until his retirement in 2002. He was made a life peer and has received 12 honorary doctorate degrees. He is the author of 14 books and currently serves as chancellor of the University of Gloucestershire and president of the London College of Theology.
