Houston Church Hosts Jewish Sukkot Festival, Feeds Homeless

Trinity, Houston, hosted a celebration of the Jewish Sukkot holiday with Congregation Emanu El on Thursday morning. The Sukkot Block Party featured a Jewish service followed by a performance by the High School of the Performing and Visual Arts and a lunch, served to the homeless. Trinity teamed with Interfaith Ministries of Greater Houston and Lord of the Streets to host the event.

Sukkot is an ancient Jewish harvest holiday which commemorates the forty-year period during which the children of Israel were wandering in the desert, living in temporary shelters. Sukkot translates to "booths," referring to the temporary shelters. In honor of the holiday, Jews construct a "sukkah," the singular form of sukkot, and they eat their harvest inside the walls of the structure.

Congregation Emanu El, Trinity, Lord of the Streets and Interfaith Ministries shared the feast of Sukkot with the homeless people of downtown Houston.
