Houston School and Church Serve Community in Holy Week

Whether it means a day off from work, a vacation day, or rearranging a meeting, the parents, students and parishioners at Holy Spirit Episcopal Church and School in Houston are planning a day of community service to mark Maundy Thursday, the day during Holy Week that Jesus washed his disciples’ feet.

On Thursday, March 28, the Day of Service will send people to Memorial Assistance Ministries (MAM), the Westside Homeless partnership and other community partners to volunteer for the day, marking its fifth year. Other students and church members will plant community gardens, clean, cook and deliver food, teach English as a Second Language, and sing at a local assisted living center. Some students spend the day reading to at-risk children in their schools.

When Hurricane Ike hit the Houston area in 2008, Bob King, who served on Holy Spirit’s outreach committee, wanted to do more for his the community. He organized a food and clothing drive, and volunteers served at Memorial Assistance Ministries (MAM). The dire need members saw hit home, and the Day of Service took root.

In the evening, members will gather with students and parents, and their outreach partners for a meal, followed by a Maundy Thursday service in the church.
