St. Stephen’s Episcopal School faculty member Hai Zheng Olefsky recently was honored by Mayor Steve Adler and the City of Austin for her work to develop and support the cultural life of the city. On May 10, 2018, the mayor proclaimed it Hai Zheng Day “for her generous and talented contributions to our community.”

Olefsky is a cultural force in Austin, working closely with members of The University of Texas at Austin, Austin Asian American Cultural Center and other organizations. She also is founder of the biennial Young Musician Festival and Competition, which showcases some of the most accomplished young artists in the region.

Within St. Stephen’s, Olefsky is associate director of the International Program, directs the Chinese Studies Program and holds the Master Teaching Chair in Critical Languages. She juggles all of these responsibilities in addition to being an internationally recognized professional solo cellist.

Her students perform, compete and shine throughout each year, both in language and in music. Congratulations to Olefsky, our St. Stephen's colleague, friend and teacher, on this great honor!
