Minority Youth Benefit in Labor Day Battle of the Holy Grill

Two master grillers will vie for the title of King of the Grill in a Labor Day barbecue cook-off at Grace Episcopal Church, Houston, Monday, September 7 from 11-4. Proceeds will fund minority youth participation and leadership opportunities at diocesan events.

Dwight Ward, a member of Hope, Houston will battle James Barron, of Trinity, The Woodlands for the title, trophy and bragging rights for the best barbecue and sauce. The two will grill brisket, chicken and sausage and delivery services will be available to Houston area churches that order 20 or more plates.

More than mouth-watering barbecue, there will be fun for the entire family with music, carnival games, face painting, food concessions, and a moonwalk. A raffle will be held for a weekend at Seven Coves Resort, Lake Conroe.

The event is co-sponsored by Grace and the Rev. John D. Epps Chapter of the Union of Black Episcopalians.*

"This event is a great example of collaboration between churches and a diocesan organization to promote outreach and evangelism in Grace's neighborhood and to help create opportunities for greater participation of minority youth in diocesan activities," said Corlie Jackson, the UBE communication coordinator.

Individual and corporate sponsorship opportunities are available. Grace Episcopal Church is located at 4040 W. Belfort Street, Houston. For more information, call Ayesha Mutope-Johnson at 713.446.5756.

*The mission of the UBE is to unite diverse cultures and encourage Black participation in the mission and governance of The Episcopal Church. The Epps Chapter was chartered in 1984 and serves as a local representative of the U.B.E.’s national mission, supporting historically Black congregations, and promoting diversity and inclusion at all levels of the Church and society. The chapter was named in memory of Epps, who was founder, interim vicar or care-taker of each of the historically Black congregations founded in the Diocese.
