Noted Benedictine, Laurence Freeman to Speak in Houston

Laurence Freeman, OSB, a Benedictine monk, and the spiritual guide and director of The World Community for Christian Meditation (WCCM), will lead a retreat at St. Martin’s, Houston, on May 18, 2011.

“The Nature of Forgiveness: Healing and Reconciliation in the Light of Meditation,” will lead participants through lecture, discussion and practice, into an exploration of Christian meditation as transformative daily prayer. The program is from 9:30 a.m. through 3:30 p.m.

A second event that evening will be a dialogue between Freeman and the Rev. J. Pittman McGehee on “The Nature of Forgiveness: Healing and Reconciliation," from 7:00-8:30 p.m.

Registration is at www.stmartinsepiscopal.org. Enter “Nature of Forgiveness” in the keyword search or to register by mail, download and print the flyer at www.wccmtexas.org.

Freeman promotes the contemplative wisdom tradition and encourages the teaching of Christian Meditation to children and students.

McGehee is a Jungian analyst, author, poet and director of the Institute for the Advancement of Psychology and Spirituality.  The former dean of Christ Church Cathedral, he is widely known as a lecturer and educator in the field of psychology and religion.

WCCM is a kind of "monastery without walls," a family of national communities and emerging communities in more than a hundred countries. The spiritual foundation is the local meditation group, which meets weekly in homes, parishes, offices, hospitals, prisons, schools and colleges--everywhere that people live and seek. The World Community is ecumenical and serves a universal "catholic" unity in its dialogue both with Christian churches and other faiths.
