Prayers and Moon Pies Mark Anniversary of First Moon Walk

St. Thomas, Nassau Bay, Will Recognize People Who Made it Possible

It took a number of people to make mans’ first steps on the moon a reality and St. Thomas, Nassau Bay, plans to recognize those pioneers of space on July 20, marking the event’s 45th anniversary.

“Walking on the moon forever changed the relationship between us and the world beyond our borders,” said the Rev. Ken Fields, interim rector of St. Thomas. “On that day, the first footprint was made on the surface of the moon. It was, perhaps, a small step for a man, but as Neil Armstrong said, ‘a giant leap for mankind.’”

Fields explained that the events of that day were in no small measure due to the work of those in the Nassau Bay area. “St. Thomas the Apostle ‘grew up’ with the Johnson Space Center and still serves as home parish to many who once worked there and many who still do,” he said. “On the 45th anniversary of the first moon walk, St. Thomas wishes to recognize them and recall with thanksgiving what their work has made possible.”

At the church’s 8 and 10:30 a.m. services, those who are present and were a part of all that led up to that day will be recognized. Among the prayers marking the anniversary are these words: “At your command all things came to be: the vast expanse of interstellar space, galaxies, suns, the planets in their courses, and this fragile earth, our island home.”

St. Thomas extends an invitation to all who were a part of making that first moon walk possible to join us for this day of celebration and recognition. Between the services that morning, at 9 a.m., a opportunity for those who were involved will be held in the fellowship hall, and, courtesy of Arlan’s Market, moon pies will be served!

St. Thomas is located at 18300 Upper Bay Road, at San Sebastian. For more information, call Cathy Jones at 281.333.2384.
