San Pedro Hosts Annual Hispanic Ministry Festival

Hispanic congregations from all over the Diocese of Texas gathered on October 11 for the annual Hispanic Ministry Festival held this year at Iglesia Episcopal de San Pedro in Pasadena, TX. The morning began with worship led by clergy from churches including San Pedro, Santa Maria Virgen and San Pablo in Houston and St. James and St. John in Austin. While the threat of rain kept some away, many gathered for the service, traditional food and folk dances representing many of the countries of origin of the parishioners.

“The festival is a time for us to come together and celebrate Hispanic ministry across the diocese,” said the Rev. Pedro N. Lopez, vicar of San Pedro. “It’s also a chance for the host Church to highlight the ministries they are doing.”

The annual Hispanic Ministry Festival travels to a different Hispanic parish in the diocese each year to help celebrate the broad cultural roots that makes up the Hispanic congregations in the Diocese. There are more than a dozen Spanish-speaking congregations in the Diocese, a number of which are additional services held in traditionally English speaking congregations. Others, like San Pedro, hold multiple services in Spanish and have added additional service for younger members in English. Outreach to Spanish speaking people in the culturally diverse Diocese of Texas has grown to match the growing numbers reflecting changes in population.
