Sewanee Sharon CoxThe Sewanee School of Theology awarded the 2012 Freeman Award for Merit to seminary student Sharron Cox, T’14. “I am grateful for the confidence the faculty has expressed in my academic abilities by way of giving me this award,” said Cox. “I continue to be challenged and stretched by each class I take. Since the moment I arrived at Sewanee, I have received support and encouragement from many students in the current senior class while my middler classmates illuminate my learning by their cogent questions and insightful discussion. I am richly blessed.”

The Freeman Award for Merit was established in 1998 by Reed Freeman and his wife, Nancy, to honor and reward a rising middler student of The School of Theology who has demonstrated outstanding academic performance and promise. Reed Freeman, Class of 1996 and 2005, was a recipient of the Woods Leadership Award while attending The School of Theology.

The award was presented during the annual DuBose Lectures at the alumni/ae dinner on Nov. 1, 2012. Bishop Alexander, dean of The School of Theology, congratulated Cox as he presented her with the award. "Sewanee is blessed with many outstanding students and the faculty's designation of Sharron Cox for the Freeman Award signals strong potential for academic achievement of the highest order."

Since her arrival at The School of Theology, Cox has served on the elections committee and missions committee. She co-organized the annual Hayneville, Ala., pilgrimage for incoming students held in August 2012.  Her other activities include coordinating registration for the 2013 Come & See weekend, singing in the seminary’s choir, supporting the Rapid Area Medical Clinic in Sewanee in May 2012, and participating in the University’s Catechumenate program engaging with undergraduates.
