Spring Teen Puts Some Muscle into Mission

Hunter Kolon
After participating in a medical mission trip to the Dominican Republic, Hunter Kolon, now a junior in high school and an active member at St. Dunstan's, Houston, felt called to make a difference for the people who lived in a batey, or company town for sugar workers. She established Misión Comodidad de Tejas, Inc., or Mission Comfort.

In the Bateyes, comfort is not something the residents feel very often, Kolon said. So many of the basic items in the States are rare, and hard to come by for these people.² These items include shampoo, soap, toothbrushes and toothpaste, baby items, feminine hygiene products, baseball caps and flip-flops.

This summer, Kolon returned to the Dominica Republic, to La Romana, where she distributed the 600 pounds of comfort items she had procured and shipped, helped to install one water filter in a batey home and sponsored an underprivileged child for a year through Compassion International.

In addition to the Dominican portion of her project, Mission Comfort has donated clothing, worth in excess of $8,000 to Lord of the Streets Homeless ministry, (LOTS), Houston. Kolon continues her efforts for the people who live in the bateyes of the Dominican Republic as well as support for the homeless men and women served at Lord of the Streets.  Keep up with her efforts on the website at mission-comfort.org or check them out on Facebook at Mission Comfort.
