Members of St. Andrew's, Bryan, celebrated the church’s 100th birthday on Sunday, April 27.

From special liturgy, organ and choir music, to the Rev. Daryl Hay, rector, wearing antique vestments, it was a day of thanksgiving and celebration.

“In today’s world, for a church to survive 100 years in an urban setting is not unique, but it is special,” Hay said.

Director of Music, Dr. Alan Strong, featured “How Firm a Foundation” as the theme for the St. Andrew’s Centennial Celebration. He wrote in the bulletin that this hymn varied from the 1892 Hymnal to the current 1980 Hymnal. ”This hymn, serves as an excellent metaphor for the church: with a single text as the 'foundation' of the hymn, but various tunes, reflecting changes in tastes from one generation to the next,” he wrote.

After the 10 a.m. worship, the congregation attended a lunch and program in the parish hall.

Dr. Sylvia Grider, Chair of the Centennial Committee, thanked each member of the committee, who began working on plans for the Centennial Celebration two years ago. Additionally,  Ann Horton, mayor pro tem, City of Bryan, read a proclamation stating April 27 as St. Andrew’s Centennial Day.

As a special keepsake, the Building Centennial Celebration Committee presented each parishioner with a booklet “Glimpses into St. Andrew’s history” which include historical articles that have been published over the past two years.

Just as with the hymn “How Sure a Foundation,” Dr. Strong said in the music overview, “we can be assured that the foundation of our church will remain solid, throughout many succeeding generations!”
