St. David's Welcomes Community with Downtown Posada

St. David's PosadaOn December 17, St. David's Episcopal Church in downtown Austin held a Posada as a way of honoring and welcoming the Hispanic community within St. David's and the Austin Community.

"This event was far more successful than we ever imagined it would be," said the Rev. Billy Tweedie, Youth Minister at St David's.

The Posada included a mariachi band featuring the singing and guitar playing talents of St. David's member José Torres. Pilgrims, including "Maria y José," began their journey on the labyrinth and walked around the church building enjoying sidewalks lined with luminarias as well as the appreciative attention of the local media and young people going out on 6th Street.

At several entrances to the historic church, the pilgrims stopped and sang songs asking for a place to stay. At each stop they were refused until the last which was Trinity Center, St. David's ministry for the homeless. Executive Director, Irit Umani, pointed out how appropriate it was that the Trinity Center welcomed the pilgrims since it serves as an open door for the homeless providing food, shelter and assitance with a variety of needs.

After a dinner of tamales, dulces and hot chocolate, the children enjoyed a piñata in Edens gym.

"So many of us at St. David's came together to organize this first time event" said Paul Skeith, a vestry member and and event organizer. "We were are so pleased that it was a success."
