St. James’, Houston has joined a number of Episcopal churches hosting a pumpkin patch for their communities with most of the work (other than the growing) done by volunteers. Parishioners unloaded 1,100 pumpkins on October 18 that transformed St. James' campus into Houston’s only Third Ward pumpkin patch.

The church hopes to highlight the 2014 harvest season for neighbors, organizations, schools and other groups to experience the goings-on of an actual pumpkin patch between the dates through October 31. The pumpkin patch is open daily from 10:00 a.m. until 6:00 p.m., and is located at 3129 Southmore Boulevard. Proceeds from the sale of the pumpkins will be used for a number of outreach ministries.

On weekends, live storytelling takes place at 12:00 noon and at 2:00 p.m. A live scarecrow is available on weekends for photo opportunities. Event organizer, D'Juanna Satcher, hopes this inaugural pumpkin patch will become a tradition in the historic Third Ward community and that families in the community will look forward to no longer having to venture beyond of their neighborhood to enjoy a pumpkin patch experience.
