St. Lucia Prime Minister Visits Trinity, Baytown

On March 27, Trinity, Baytown hosted the Honorable Stephenson King, Prime Minister of St. Lucia, during his first official visit to Houston and Baytown for a town hall meeting with the St. Lucia Association of Texas. Members of the church served afternoon tea, cookies, and cucumber sandwiches to the Prime Minister and the Board of the St. Lucia Association.

Over 200 people from the greater Baytown area were in attendance to hear the Prime Minister give a status report on current activities in their home island, including efforts to rebuild the infrastructure after the devastation left by Hurricane Tomas in November, 2010.

The Rev. Gena Davis, Associate Rector at Trinity, gave the invocation, and after singing the national anthem of St. Lucia, Trinity’s Robert Horton led the gathering in the singing of the Star Spangled Banner. It was an historic moment in the life of Trinity Episcopal Church as well as for the people of St. Lucia who have emigrated to the greater Houston area.

Prime Minister King expressed sincere appreciation for the hospitality and promised that he would do his best to find time during his next visit to Houston to worship with Trinity.

Trinity Episcopal Church has established relationships with various Caribbean island communities of Baytown and Houston through its annual celebration of Caribbean International Day each June which coincides with Caribbean Island history month. Trinity’s congregation is multi-cultural, including members from the Caribbean Islands of St. Lucia, St. Croix, St. Kitts, Jamaica, Antigua, Montserrat, and Trinidad.

“We are blessed to have such a culturally diverse group of people in our midst,” said Davis. “The Caribbean Islanders come to us with a deep sense of reverence, liturgical appreciation, biblical knowledge, and joyful spirits.  We all have much to learn from each other.”

The 2nd Annual Baytown Caribbean International Day will be held at Trinity Episcopal Church, Baytown on Saturday, June 11, 2011.  Details forthcoming.  Everyone is invited to this fun day of fellowship, games, great food, and ecumenical worship.
