St. Luke's Episcopal Health Charities Welcomes Sanjay Gupta

St. Luke's Episcopal Health Charities Held their 15th Annual Crystal Celebration on Friday, welcoming CNN's Dr. Sanjay Gupta as the featured speaker. The event raised more than $800,000 for St. Luke's EHC, which gives grants to non-profit community health service programs.

A crowd of 800 turned out to hear Renaissance man Dr. Sanjay Gupta at the St. Luke's Episcopal Health Charities' 15th Annual Crystal Celebration, chaired by Flo McGee


Co-sponsored by the Houston Chronicle, the event at the Hilton Americas-Houstonraised $800,000 for the organization, which has given more than $88 million in grants to nonprofit community health service programs since its inception.


Gupta - CNN medical correspondent, neurosurgeon and best-selling author - shared compelling stories about people he's met on assignment while reporting on natural disasters and war. Deftly blending poignance and levity, he included the tale of the famous incident in Iraq when he was embedded with a group named the "Devil Docs" and was asked to remove a sniper's bullet from a wounded soldier's brain.


Gupta also discussed his fascination with the motivation center in our brains and his interest in "the universal reward center" of the ventral striatum that "lights up" when we do something good for others. "Most people are inherently compassionate," he said.
