St. Mark's Offers Free Texas Concert Series for Lent

During Lent, a time of reflection and preparation for Easter, St. Mark’s Episcopal Church, Houston (3816 Bellaire Blvd.), is offering its second annual Songs of Lovin’ and Redemption series of five free Wednesday evening concerts, all beginning at 7 p.m. The series features Texas singer-songwriter luminaries presenting their works. All programs will be in the church sanctuary.

“This departure from the more common series of Lenten lectures was a successful innovation last year,” said the Rev. Eric Hungerford, associate rector. “We invite the community to share in our musical, spiritual journey through this Lenten series.”

“Because Lent is a season of focusing on the inner spiritual journey,” he continued, “we chose musical artists we find profound and thought-provoking. All of these artists write and perform songs that relate to their inner journey. That’s why the series is called Songs of Lovin’ and Redemption. We want to share with people art that has been inspired by real-life encounters with redemption. Sam Baker, for example, has an incredible life story and has made it through an enormous amount of personal hardship with grace. Come join us. We welcome you!”

The Concerts:

March 12: San Antonio native Terri Hendrix

March 19: Texas native Sam Baker

March 26: A widely acclaimed, Grammy-nominated Texas singer-songwriter with a forthcoming album makes this special, surprise appearance.

April 2: Shake Russell and Dallas native Michael Hearne

April 9: Ray Wylie Hubbard

Palm Sunday, April 13: Husband-and-wife team Matt and Cameron Hammon

Wednesday concert-goers are invited to the church fellowship hall for a simple meal prepared by the St. Mark’s Youth Group at 6 p.m. before each concert. For more information, call the church office (713.664.3466).
