St. Mark's, Houston, will be offering a series of free concerts by Texas singer-songwriters during Lent. The concerts will be held in the sanctuary of the church every Wednesday, starting February 20. Each night will begin with a potluck dinner at 6 p.m., followed by the performance at 7 p.m. at 3816 Bellaire Blvd.

“We chose this format for a Lenten series because we wanted something fresh for what we see as a new season at St. Mark’s," said the Rev. Eric Hungerford, associate rector. "We felt like this would be a fun and welcoming way to say to the city 'we’re here and we welcome you.'"

The the Lenten series titled "Songs of Lovin' and Redemption" will feature Ray Wylie Hubbard, Billy Joe Shaver, Terri Hendrix, and Shake Russell.

"We chose musical artists who we believe to be profound and thought-provoking because Lent is a season of focusing on the inner spiritual journey, and we felt that all of these artists write and perform song that relate to that inner Journey," Hungerford explained. "We want to share with people art that has been inspired by real-life encounters with redemption. Billy Joe Shaver, for example, has an incredible life story and has made it through an enormous amount of personal hardship with grace and writes very introspectively about that.”
