St. Martin’s Hosts Interfaith Service of Prayers and Songs for Peace

St. Martin’s, Houston will host an Interfaith Service of Prayers and Songs for Peace on Sunday, December 11 at 6 p.m. at 717 Sage Road at Woodway. Rabbi David Lyon, Senior Rabbi at Congregation Beth Israel and Imam Wazir Ali, Imam of the Masjid Warithud-Deen Mohammed and Masjid Al-Qur’an will join St. Martin’s rector, the Rev. Dr. Russell J. Levenson, Jr. for the event.

The event is offered at the invitation of the Rt. Hon. Countess of Carnarvon, Lady Fiona Carnarvon, who resides at Highclere Castle in Newbury, England, the backdrop for Masterpiece Theatre’s Downton Abbey. Offerings taken during the service will benefit Oxfam, an international confederation of charitable organizations focused on the alleviation of global poverty.

Over the last year, Carnarvon has encouraged religious communities around the world to consider a special moment of prayer and song for the cause of global peace and good will and to help support Oxfam efforts to alleviate poverty. A service also will be held that day at St. Elisabeth’s Church in Marburg, Germany, St. Martin’s sister church.

“We remember during the Advent season that our Lord Jesus was from the moment of his birth a child of peace with no home and no place to lay his head,” Levenson said. “We will remember especially all those around our globe who have no home, who have had to flee their homes for safety, and we will also open our hearts to give generously to support the care of Syrian refugees throughout Western Europe.”
