St. Martin’s Hosts Points of Light Interfaith Prayer Service

Jon Meacham to be Featured Speaker

 

Former Newsweek editor Jon Meacham joins interfaith leaders at St. Martin’s on October 18 for a special service “to pray for peace, for unity , for our nation and in the cause of serving others,” according to organizers. The public is invited to the event, which starts at 6 p.m.

 

Meacham, a Pulitzer Prize winning author, is the special guest speaker for the Points of Light Foundation’s “One Prayer: Many Faiths.” Hosted by the Rev. Russ Levenson, rector of St. Martin’s; Rabbi David Lyon, senior rabbi of Congregation Beth Israel and Imam Wazir Ali, resident Imam Masjid WD Mohammed of Mercy Community Center and other clergy leaders from various Houston faith communities. Members of the St. Martiin’s choir and the Houston Symphony will also participate in the prayer service.

 

The Sunday event is part of the Points of Light MLK Day of Service program inspired by Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.'s vision of people of diverse backgrounds interacting on personal levels, discussing and addressing the education crisis in America's schools. It will be followed by Faith Day, featuring a number of worships led by experts and other distinguished speakers who will provide best practices for faith volunteers. Meacham is a contributing editor to Time magazine and has written for several other national publications. He is author of American Lion, the Pulitzer Prize winning biography of Andrew Jackson; Thomas Jefferson: The Art f Power, Franklin and Winston, American Gospel and his newest book, Destiny and Power, a biography of George H. W. Bush, to be published in November 2015. He serves as chair of the National Advisory Board of the John C. Danforth Center on Religion and Politics at Washington University.
