The Rt. Rev. James Tengatenga, Bishop of the Diocese of Southern Malawi, continued his tour of the Diocese of Texas with a stop at St. Michael’s, Austin, on Sunday, June 24. St. Michaels and Bishop Tengatenga promoted a parish to parish interchange between St. Michael’s and the parish at Mount Mulanje.

While there, Bishop Tengatenga was presented with a $1000 check from St. Michael’s to help pay for water wells in Malawi. Lisa Martin, the Austin Convocation Coordinator for the Episcopal Church Women, also presented the visiting bishop with 80 pillowcase dresses for the little girls of Malawi.

The dresses were made by eight ladies from a sewing group in Bertram Texas that belong to the Episcopal Church of the Epiphany in Burnet. The “Patchwork Gals” include Ellie Burks, Billie Kennedy, Mae Gibson, Linda Baker, Bobbie Bothne, Ellon Gustafson, Dea Bardin, and Faye Webb. The ladies saw an article in the local paper about Burks making dresses and it piqued their interest so much that they ended up buying material, cutting and sewing to help her effort.

The Patchwork Gals intend to do this every year. The pillowcase dresses are one of the outreach projects of the Diocese of Texas Episcopal Church Women this year.

According to Martin, it is the hope of the Patchwork Gals that the Lord blesses those who wear these dresses, as much as he has blessed those who made them.
