St. Stephen's Episcopal School, Houston, Receives International Baccalaureate Certification

St. Stephen’s Episcopal School announced its certification as an International Baccalaureate school, and will begin offering the IB diploma program with the 2014-2015 junior class.

The certification makes St. Stephen’s the first Episcopal high school in the Diocese of Texas to be IB accredited.  The school is also the only American school to offer the integration of Montessori, IB and the International Middle Years Curriculum.

“We have always offered a challenging and advanced curriculum, said Head of School David Coe, “but we are delighted that with this certification comes the recognition of the broader community and the opportunity to achieve college credits from an educational experience built on an interdisciplinary curriculum.”

Under Texas law, students who meet the International Baccalaureate Diploma Program requirements and pass all IB course exams are admitted to Texas public universities with a minimum of 24 credits, allowing them to begin study with sophomore standing. The first IB Diploma graduating class will complete their studies in the spring of 2016.

“We are delighted that all our hard work has led to this recognition,” said the Rev. Lisa Hunt, rector of St. Stephen’s Episcopal Church. “Our faculty strives to develop the gifts of all students and this certification will allow families to save more than a year’s tuition. That’s a gift in itself.”

The IB Diploma Program (DP) is an academically challenging and balanced program of education with final examinations that prepares students, aged 16 to 19, for success at university and life beyond.  It has been designed to address the intellectual, social, emotional and physical well-being of students. The program has gained recognition and respect from the world’s leading universities.
