St. Stephen's Reaches Out Through Reading

St. Stephen's, Beaumont recently delivered 22 bins of books each with a teddy bear to schools in its neighborhood. The school principal and counselor had chosen kids in kindergarten through 3rd grade who could benefit from reading enrichment over the summer.

The church loaded each bin with books appropriate for their reading levels while All Saints School donated books from their library with other new and used books donated by the congregation.

“The project is called Books and a Bear and we are hoping it will grow next year to include another school and more students,” said the Rev. Patricia Ritchie. “We hope that in addition to collaborating with the schools we can get other community groups involved.”

In August, St. Stephen’s will host Stubi's Reading Camp in collaboration with Ubi Caritas on their campus.  The nearby elementary school has chosen 12 kindergarten students to participate. Two parishioners from St. Stephen’s who have expertise in special needs reading have designed a curriculum for the five-day reading-readiness camp.
