St. Vincent's House Asks for Help in Food Drive

St. Vincent's outside logoI would like to take this opportunity to invite you to join me and participate in the First Lutheran Food Drive for the St. Vincent’s House Food Pantry. Our food pantry named “Loaves and Fishes” operates daily Monday-Friday, 9 a.m. - 5 p.m. Loaves and Fishes is primarily supported by donations from food drives by churches, service and social organizations and individuals. Last year 2012, we provided food for over 7,800 individuals and families.

Many of you may not realize that Galveston is a food insecure community. Being food insecure means an individual or a family has difficulty in providing the necessary food to feed themselves on a regular basis. St. Vincent’s House attempts to address this situation with its Food Security Initiative. This initiative is collaboration with other food providers and social service agencies whose mission is to see that no one in Galveston goes hungry.

“Loaves and Fishes “also provides food for those without facilities to cook through our Snakpak program. This Snakpak is a bag lunch with easy opening pop top individual serving items. A typical snack pack includes a meat item, crackers, fruit cup, and a beverage (water/fruit drink). This Snakpak is often the only meal of the day for some.

Food items you can bring to the First Lutheran Food Drive on September 8, for Snakpaks are Vienna Sausage, fruit cups, cheese/peanut butter crackers, snack bars, juice boxes/pouches, bottle water, tuna fish packs, chicken packs, beef jerky, raisins, other dice fruit, ravioli/spaghetti cups, breakfast bars and for the regular food bag canned meat, vegetables, mac and cheese and other dry goods.

“Loaves and Fishes” accepts nonperishable items, to fill the bags. We Hope to see on September 8at First Lutheran Church.

Sincerely,

Michael Jackson
