Texas A&M Student Chaplain Announces Move

Texas A&M’s Canterbury will soon lose its chaplain, the Rev. Matt Wise, who recently accepted a position as associate rector at St. Mark's, San Antonio.  St. Thomas, the church with which the Canterbury shares a campus, recently lost its rector, the Rev. Rhoda Montgomery, to cancer.

“I've heard it said that true discernment is making a choice between two very good things,” Wise wrote in his letter to students, noting the difficulty he’d had in making his decision.

Wise credited students’ presence and dedication for the vibrant ministry of Canterbury, which has accomplished much in his three years at the Texas A&M. Episcopal Student Center. His letter continued: “Our ministries have grown exponentially; we have reclaimed our Episcopal identity while welcoming all people without exceptions; raised up strong leadership teams; built relationships with other student faith communities; developed formation opportunities from Bible studies to small groups to pilgrimages across the globe; and deepened our connections with one another and with Christ.”

Wise will complete the semester at A&M before he and his wife, Amy, move to San Antonio shortly after Christmas.  Austin Smith will continue as program coordinator for the student center following Wise's departure.
