Texas Bar Foundation Honors Proyecto Santiago

Proyecto Santiago announced it has received a $7,200 grant from the Texas Bar Foundation.

The grant will enable Proyecto Santiago to provide a bi-monthly Sunday afternoon bilingual legal forums with pro bono attorneys and paralegals at Norman Elementary on Austin’s eastside for parents and community members. Topics will included: rights of immigrants, interacting appropriately with police, consumer information, how to set up bank accounts (and avoid pay-day lending scams), landlord/tenant, how to work with local schools for the benefit of the children (e.g. bilingual and disability issues), and workers’ rights. The grant also includes providing a weekly bilingual pláticas (“chats”) series at Norman for parents and community on the same topics. The students at Norman are half Hispanic, half African American; 95% of them have family incomes below the poverty level.

The staff and volunteers of Proyecto Santiago are very grateful to the Texas Bar Foundation for supporting the Norman elementary initiative.

Since its inception in 1965, the Texas Bar Foundation has awarded more than $18 million in grants to law-related programs. Generously supported by members of the State Bar of Texas, the Texas Bar Foundation has the well-deserved distinction of being the nation’s largest charitable bar foundation.

This year, the Foundation achieved the remarkable milestone of $1 million in providing support non-profit organizations that meet the Foundation’s goals of providing assistance to poor and low-income people, helping the legal system be more accessible to Texans, advancing justice in the Lone Star State, and supporting the rule of law.

Proyecto Santiago operates under the aegis of Welcome Table, Inc., a non-profit IRS 501(c)(3) organization, which serves Travis County’s poorest and high-risk residents and most populated minority communities.
