Trinity, Midtown Houston, Swings with Big Band Mass

Trinity in midtown Houston will feature Big Band era music during their regular worship, at 10:30 on Sunday, November 9. This offering is in keeping with the musical diversity celebrated at the church over the past 16 years, first celebrated with a jazz festival, culminating in worship that featured Duke Ellington’s sacred music.

Ellington’s Concert of Sacred Music premiered “Overture to Black, Brown and Beige” at Grace Episcopal Cathedral, San Francisco, February 7, 1965, to celebrate the cathedral’s completion. Trinity honored the musician on a number of occasions, bringing renowned jazz musicians together for concerts, master classes and finally, in worship. After a number of years, a Big Country Mass, and a Missa Nova, featuring Brasilian Bossa Nova expanded Trinity’s musical diversity tradition.

The Big Band Mass will feature Paul English, well known to Texas audiences as a jazz pianist. English is also a composer and has worked with symphony and chamber orchestras, theatre art groups, film and television.

Trinity was founded in 1893 and has continually adapted to the changing nature of the city, first as a mission in a new “residential” area on the outskirts of Houston, southwest of Downtown, and today, as a beacon of faith and service in the Midtown Houston, nearby to many of Houston’s young and diverse professionals moving closer to the Downtown area.
