Under the Same Sky: Rev. Canon Sally Bingham Visits Austin

The Rev. Canon Sally Bingham, President and Founder of the national Interfaith Power and Light, will be at All Saints' in Austin for a series of events, October 21-23. Bingham's visit presents the Central Texas community with a unique opportunity to connect around issues of environmental stewardship and to explore religious responses to global warming. We invite you to participate, and invite your friends!

Friday evening, October 21, 6:30 - 9 p.m. all are welcome to join in a celebration of life and the planet. “Arts and the Environment: Under the Same Sky” is a family event complete with art, music and family activities. The Drumsistas, a women's djembe drum ensemble, will play and lead a ceremony celebrating all life.

A workshop focusing on global warming with Bingham as the keynote speaker will take place Saturday morning from 9 a.m. - 2 p.m. The event will also feature a morning panel presentation and conversation followed by a light lunch ($10) and an early afternoon session of small group discussions. To register, email  .

On Sunday morning, Bingham will preach at both services of All Saints, 9 and 11:30 a.m., with an Interfaith Power & Light Q & A session in-between services.

And college students are invited to "A Conversation with Future Leaders" on Sunday afternoon. It runs from 4-6 pm at the Episcopal Student Center, downstairs in the parish hall.

In conjunction with this event, there is an art show. The title of the weekend events, 'Under the Same Sky,' was selected to represent the idea that all and everything on Earth shares more than soil and water – we live on a single planet and share the same sky. Doug Jaques, Austin artist and All Saints' vestry member, chairs the parish Visual Arts Committee. With his wife Linda, they publicized and organized the show. Interspersed amongst the art works – that includes two-dimensional art like photographs, fabric art, and paintings - are quotations from various religious traditions around the world. They all share the "same sky" and all reverently honor the same earth.

Texas Interfaith Power & Light and All Saints Episcopal Church are co-sponsoring Bingham's visit to Austin. Additional co-sponsors include Austin Presbyterian Theological Seminary, Seminary of the Southwest, and the Interfaith Environmental Network of Austin.

Bingham is the President and Founder of The Regeneration Project and Interfaith Power and Light which now operates in 39 states. She serves as Canon for the Environment in the Episcopal Diocese of California and is the lead author of Love God Heal Earth, published by St. Lynn’s Press in 2009. As one of the first faith leaders to fully recognize global warming as a core moral issue, she has mobilized thousands of religious people to put their faith into action through energy stewardship.
