Wales: Mass service at the rugby ground

Archbishop Barry Morgan preaching at the
Deanery Day at Mountain Ash Rugby Ground

[ACNS] Hundreds of churchgoers gathered at Mountain Ash Rugby ground for a mass service led by the Archbishop of Wales, Dr Barry Morgan.

Instead of worshipping in their individual churches, more than 300 parishioners in the Cynon Valley gathered together recently for the Deanery Day and Eucharist.

Area Dean, Revd Michael Jones said, “I was delighted by the support for this event. Every parish contributed in some way to the day, and everything including the weather just fell into place. It was wonderful to see the deanery come together to celebrate our faith as one family.

“The Cynon Valley Deanery is one of the most compact in the Diocese where everyone knows each other and where people across the deanery meet each other in different ways on a regular basis - this could be out shopping or taking a leisurely stroll around the country park in Aberdare.

“The Deanery works well together in many different ways and it was with this in mind that it was suggested we should come together more often especially for worship.”

Following the Eucharist service led by the Archbishop, parishioners picniced and played various sports on the rugby field.

The day finished with a deanery ‘hymns of praise’ led by Hywel Davies, former vicar of Dewi Sant, Cardiff. Each hymn was chosen by a particular parish.

The Cynon Valley Deanery Day was held on Sunday, June 22.
